How to give directive feedback while maintaining a productive relationship.
How do I give directive feedback and maintain an empathic relationship?
Step 1: Describe what you observed.
Step 2: Say how that makes you feel.
Step 3: Explain why you feel that way about it.
Good example: “I noticed you were 10 minutes late for our team meeting (Step 1). This makes me frustrated (Step 2). Because I want to use our time as efficiently as possible (Step 3).”
Bad example: “You’re always late for our team meetings. It shows how little you care. Frankly, I’m starting to wonder if you still fit in.”
